I have uncomplicated feelings about Jenny Craig. It was one of my first diets as a 10 year old (yikes)! And what I remember most is the horrible tasting tiny amounts of food (this was before frozen microwaveable meals, not that it matters but it was just so so bad) and the shame I felt that I couldn’t stick with it and had cost my struggling working class parents so much money. They were doing the best they could to protect me from bullies and bad self image. It wasn’t the right approach and I wish they knew better but companies like this were fine with taking their money for a 10 year old. Good riddance!

Maybe I’m just a bad person, but I don’t feel sorry for the people losing their jobs. I’m not going to pretend to be sad the snake oil salespeople no longer make their living selling snake oil.

When I was fresh out of university and looking for work in 2006, I very misguidedly accepted a position with long-dead-now weightloss company LA Weightloss. I thought it would be amazing to help women feel good about themselves. I made it through three days of the training program before I realized the company and program were doing the exact opposite. So I quit, which I realize now was a privilege to be able to do. This experience actually became the trigger for my awakening to diet culture and anti-fat bias so in a way I am grateful for it. I was thrilled years later when I learned the company shut down. Yes, people lost their jobs and that sucks, but the harm they were doing in these jobs is so much greater. I hope we see an end to the entire industry. It can't come soon enough.
